First Devlog (0.0.0.1-a)

The very first steps are always the most difficult. But after long consideration, I've decided to release a playable alpha of Card Brawl!

In this very first devlog of Card Brawl! I would like to explain what features are available in the game and what would I update it with.

In this very first public release version (0.0.0.1-a) Card Brawl! already has the following features implemented:

  1. A playable game between computers or other players (network)
  2. A basic account system to track player's win/lose count and card inventory along with a deck builder.
  3. A card pack system where players can buy packs using in-game currencies to get cards. This serves as an objective (collecting cards) although it is still very basic for now.
  4. A public room queue although it is very rudimentary.

The current game, to me, is still unsatisfactory. There are more things I know I can improve on the game, a few of the points I will be focusing more on in the next update are:

  1. Updating the battlefield scene/UI. The current one is too basic and I would like to improve it more to make the game much more strategic and complex.
  2. Adding new card types to add a more complex strategic layer to the game. This new card type will be similar to the magic and trap cards in Yu-Gi-Oh although I would still prefer to keep this new card type mechanic simple so that everyone can pick it up easily.
  3. Revising the gameplay loop. My objective is to make a semi-realtime card battle game where the order of turn is determined by the card you play. This will hopefully make the game much more fast-paced. But of course, making things real-time has its disadvantages so I'm trying to keep things in balance.
  4. And of course, I will be adding more cards whether it is units/creature cards or "magic/trap" cards (still thinking of the perfect name for the new card mechanic). I would also like to design "variant cards". These are cards with special designs that have a rarer chance to drop from card packs. This could serve as another objective for collection.

By how things go, hopefully I can deliver the new update in a month (me being optimistic)

For those who are interested in the game, feel free to try the game out and share your thoughts (feedback, suggestions, criticism, anything). I don't mind brutally honest opinions and I'm also open to conversation/discussion about the game.

Thank you for reading,
